Welding Technology Program
Language :Turkish
Duration (Years): 2
Maximum Duration (Years): 4
Quota: 30
Internship Status: 30 WORKING DAYS SUMMER INTERNSHIP
ÖSYM Type: TYT
Program Content
Department Name: Machinery and Metal Technologies
Program Name: Welding Technology
School and/or Department where the Program will be Conducted: Fırat University EOSB Vocational School
Purpose of the Program
The main purpose of the program is to train qualified technical personnel with sufficient knowledge and equipment in welded joints. Students enrolled in this program will know the historical development and types of welding, will be able to choose appropriate welding parameters and methods, will be able to prepare parts for welding, will be able to weld in different welding positions, and will be able to weld ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Technical personnel with these qualifications will gain technical experience through internship opportunities in businesses and will be able to work as intermediate and/or main personnel for businesses. Within the framework of this program, an effective practical work program is being prepared for graduate students to get to know the working conditions more closely and in parallel with their education. Graduates of this program will fill the personnel gap needed especially in the welded joints and assembly departments in the metal production sector.
Reasons for Opening the Program
Welding, in its simplest and most general definition, is the process of joining materials of the same or different metallurgical properties under heat and/or pressure in a way that cannot be disassembled, with or without the use of filler material. When we consider that welded joints are an indispensable joining method used in every industry and sector, from the construction sector to the laying of oil and natural gas lines in the machine manufacturing industry, it can be understood more clearly how important and how special a process welding is. The search for quality in welded manufacturing triggers the need for qualified and equipped welders, as well as the concept of Welding Technician. This concept is neither very old nor very new for our country. During the Welding Technician training, a wide range of training is provided such as material knowledge, welding methods, control of weld seams, behavior and reliability of weld seams under static or dynamic loads. The responsibility area of the Welding Technician includes many factors such as selection of main material, selection of appropriate welding method and filler material suitable for the main material, parameter settings, determination of heat treatment before and after welding, destructive and non-destructive inspection methods after welding, etc. In order to increase the quality of education of students registered in the Welding Technology Program of Vocational School, to train Welding Technicians in the conditions of our country, to direct educational activities accordingly, to research and increase the employment-oriented internship and practical work opportunities for our students, Industry-Education Cooperation agreement studies are carried out with the institutions listed below.
Student Resource
Students will be accepted from Vocational High Schools, Technical High Schools, Anatolian Vocational High Schools and Anatolian Technical High Schools' welding, machinery and installation technology department graduates based on the YGS-1 score type.
Title
Students who graduate from the program will receive the title of "Welding Technician".
Places where graduates of the program can be employed and the market demand for graduates
The program trains intermediate staff who can perform technical operations on materials containing metal. Graduates can work as technicians in iron, steel, aluminum, casting factories and workshops belonging to the public or private sector. Elazığ Organized Industrial Zone has a rapidly developing structure. Hundreds of companies operate in Elazığ OSB for export. The fact that many of these businesses are geared towards material and machinery manufacturing has revealed a need for intermediate staff in particular. There is a Mechanical Engineering Department program within many Vocational Schools. However, students of this program are inadequate in welding-based laboratories and applications. The fact that the Welding Technology program will be opened has emerged in the meetings held with some industrial establishments in the region.
Program Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the program, it is required to complete all courses given in 4 semesters and complete the Sector Practice in the summer term of the program. Sector practice corresponds to internship work and covers the current 30 working days of internship.
History
The Welding Technology Program started education in the 2013-2014 academic year by accepting 30 students for regular education.
Degree Earned
Welding Technician
Admission Conditions
Within the framework of the regulations determined by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), student admission to this program is made through the exam system conducted by the Student Selection and Placement (ÖSYS) Center. After students declare their program preferences, they are placed in the relevant programs by this center according to the scores they receive from this exam. Foreign students are accepted to this program with the results of internationally valid exams such as SAT and ACT or according to their secondary school graduation grades (Associate Degree and Undergraduate Programs Foreign Student Admission Directive). Admission to programs with a General Academic Exchange Protocol is made within the framework of bilateral agreements signed between the cooperating (partner) universities (such as ERASMUS, FARABI, etc.). Guest students can register for the courses given in this program if the relevant academic unit approves. The requirement is to have sufficient language skills to follow the program.
Moving to the Upper Level
Those who successfully complete the Welding Technology associate degree program can vertically transfer to the following programs if they are successful in the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) opened by ÖSYM: Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Materials Engineering Materials Science and Engineering
Graduation Requirements
Students graduate from the program by completing at least 100 credits (120 ECTS). The duration of education is four semesters. (ECTS: European Credit Transfer System)
Graduate Employment Opportunities
Graduates can work as technicians in public or private iron and steel, aluminum, casting factories, machinery, aviation, automotive, construction, and shipbuilding industries. Welding technicians carry out work related to the implementation of the work plan prepared by the engineer in factories and workshops belonging to public and private institutions. They help the engineer in planning the production activity, deciding which material to use and which method to use when welding. They draw and weld all kinds of welded structures. They supervise production. They carry out quality control work.
Measurement and Evaluation
Each student must register for classes at the beginning of the semester and attend at least 70% of the classes and 80% of the practical sessions in order to take the final exam. Students are subjected to at least 1 midterm and final exam for each course. The contribution of the midterm exam (the scores obtained from assessment tools such as homework, laboratory exam, quiz, etc. can also be taken into account as the midterm grade) to the success grade is 40%, and the contribution of the final exam is 60%. All exams are evaluated out of 100 points. It is mandatory to get at least 50 points from the final exam. Students who get at least 60 from a course are considered to have passed that course.
